Roncopathy surgery (chronic pathological snoring)

The most effective surgical solutions for some increasingly common sleep disorders.

SNORING

The roncopathy (from the Greek “rhonchòs”, an onomatopoeic term that mimics the sound of snoring) is the term used in medicine to refer to snoring, or the annoying (and sometimes deafening, with a sound intensity that can reach 70db) noise that is emitted during breathing due to the vibration of the pharynx walls and the soft palate.

Fortunately, surgical techniques exist that allow the otolaryngologist to effectively resolve the roncopathy, a real disease that lowers the patient’s quality of life.

Roncopathy: health risks

Far from being just a source of a disturbance for those living next to a subject afflicted by snoring, chronic snoring is a real pathology that can create many problems for the body: it occurs, in fact, when the soft palate and Pharyngeal structures show an enlargement.
The sound of snoring is an alarm signal that indicates that there are conditions that make breathing difficult: the narrowing of the airways can in fact lead to sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea combined with snoring is called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) which causes the patient:

  • bad rest
  • difficulty in awakening
  • daytime weakness and drowsiness

The consequent reduced oxygenation of the blood can help to determine or aggravate a cardiological pathology.

Causes of snoring

The causes that predispose to the onset of roncopathy and OSA are related to anatomical causes involving obstruction of the nasal passages (turbinate hypertrophy, deviation of the nasal septum, nasal polyps), the conformation of the soft palate or hypertrophy of the tonsils or base of the tongue.
The snoring can also be favored by the relaxation of the tissues linked to the advancing age, overweight, the use of alcohol, or the abuse of sedative drugs.
The disorder affects men and women in very similar percentages (60% of men against 40% of women).

How to resolve snoring?

First of all, it is essential to undergo an in-depth otorhinolaryngology examination that allows us to investigate the general health conditions; if necessary, further investigations (such as polysomnography) will be suggested to correctly assess the main parameters of night rest.
Once the cause of the disorder has been identified, it will be evaluated if there is an indication to propose a surgical solution.
